Start with the four things you can check yourself
Most warm-air calls we run turn out to be one of these. It costs you nothing to look.
- The air filter. A filter packed with dust chokes airflow. The system runs, the air moves slowly, and what comes out feels warm. If you cannot see light through it, replace it.
- The thermostat fan setting. If the fan is set to ON instead of AUTO, it blows air constantly, including between cooling cycles. That air is room temperature. Switch it to AUTO.
- The breaker. Most systems have two breakers, one for the indoor unit and one for the outdoor unit. If only the outdoor one tripped, the fan inside keeps blowing warm air. Reset it once. If it trips again, stop and call us. A breaker that keeps tripping is telling you something is wrong.
- The outdoor unit. Walk outside and look. Is the fan on top spinning? If the inside is blowing but the outside unit is silent, that narrows it down fast.
Before you touch anything electrical, cut the power at the breaker. Never open the outdoor unit's electrical panel or handle refrigerant lines yourself. There is enough stored charge in some components to seriously hurt you even with the power off.
What usually needs a technician
If the basics check out, it is normally one of these, and none are DIY jobs.
- Low refrigerant. Refrigerant is not consumed like fuel. If you are low, you have a leak. Topping it off without finding the leak just means paying again next summer.
- A failed capacitor. A common and relatively cheap failure. The compressor tries to start and cannot.
- A frozen evaporator coil. Ice on the coil blocks airflow completely. If you see frost on the copper lines, shut the system off and read our piece on why an AC freezes up.
- A failing compressor. The expensive one. On an older system this is often the point where replacing makes more sense than repairing.
One Georgia-specific note
On a 95 degree afternoon, a healthy system should pull the air down about 15 to 20 degrees below what is coming in, not down to whatever number is on the thermostat. If your house is 85 and the air from the vent is 68, the system is working. It is just losing a race against the heat. That is usually an insulation, duct, or sizing problem rather than a broken AC.
